Always think before you upload anything. Always check what you’ve uploaded. And learn to see the funny side if you forget to do both.

I have to admit to not having heard anything about this story until now, when it appears to have already run its course. Still, it’s a fascinating (if very flawed) argument that Wallace puts forward…
Essentially, by giving software away, they have stifled competition by creating an environment where small developers can’t compete with Linux’s price-point. The GPL functions as the conspiracy in this strange world, since it is a common effort to pull the price-rug out from under any potential competitors.
As an aside, I do wish El Reg would stop sniping at OSS… Comments like “And even though these new products might be clunky, difficult to use and inaccessible to all but the geekiest of geeks, such a cooperative is not illegal” are painfully indicative of the paper’s opinion of OSS; perhaps they have forgotten that (among other things) the Apache and PHP that drive their website is Open Source?

Yes, it’s Saturday night. Yes, I’ve been drinking. But. But. I’m sure the Mouse Rug will still stand as a cool item when I’ve sobered up. I sure hope so, anyway, now that one is winging its way to York

Particularly when that’s the number of comments you have. I guess it’s the kind of problem you can forgive

Sometimes you wonder exactly which dictionary people use… I suggest throwing this one away.

Like an ex-smoker or a born again Christian I’ve started to get quite boring about Javascript. Having complained bitterly when forced to use it and actively avoided it wherever possible I had an epiphany about a month back, and am now convinced that the world’s problems are all solvable with the power of MochiKit. To be fair, my first real use of Javascript was as the embedded language within the Netscape LiveWire application server that came with Enterprise Server, so you can understand why I started out hating it. Things have moved on, and libraries like MochiKit have made some ludicrous things possible.
That said, one of the limitations of MochiKit are the animations. There is a lot to be said that that’s probably a good thing, but with things like script.aculo.us floating around MochiKit really needed some good and well documented animation stuff. MochiKit.Visual is on its way there, but MochiKit.Animator is another step further again. That fisheye demo is a thing to behold!

For some reason I can’t quite identify I’ve ended up watching some fascinating rockumentaries over the last week. First up was Don Letts’ amazing “Tales of Dr Funkenstein” (a George Clinton/P-Funk film). Then last night a frank view of Paul Weller and tonight Artsworld showed “Fearless Freaks“, which turned out to be a really moving film about the Flaming Lips. I was expecting it to be a little overblown (like some of their recent TV appearances) but actually it was really close to the bone and utterly enthralling. As one reviewer of the movie over at Amazon says - “there is a fine line between hope and despair in small town America”. All 3 films are well worth a watch, but both Tales of Dr Funkenstein and Fearless Freaks are highly recommended.
