Flying Spaghetti Monster

Posted at 7:57am on Friday, August 5th, 2005

For example, a scientist may perform a carbon-dating process on an artifact. He finds that approximately 75% of the Carbon-14 has decayed by electron emission to Nitrogen-14, and infers that this artifact is approximately 10,000 years old, as the half-life of Carbon-14 appears to be 5,730 years. But what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage.

How many punch cards does it take to store an MP3?

Posted at 1:37pm on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

Younger readers may not remember that computers used to be programmed by punch card. Apparently it would take 40,960 cards to store a 3 minute mp3 and the reader would need a throughput of 228 cards/second to play it. Jesus. In context, my mum and dad, both early computer workers for the British government, met because dad ran the machines on which mum’s punch cards ran - it’s not that long ago…

Foreigner tagging - the new US sport

Posted at 1:16pm on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

This is amazing… Non-Canadians crossing from Canada into the US at 3 different crossing points will be required to carry an RFID card containing, amongst other things, biometric information at all times during their visit to the US. The card can be read from 12 metres by the relevant device.
