Johnno retires

Posted at 5:47pm on Saturday, January 17th, 2004

Sad to say, but Martin Johnson has retired from international rugby. It’s impossible to describe how much he’s given to English rugby. Like Steve Waugh’s retirement this year we’ve lost another truly great captain in international sport. Who’ll replace him? Being a Gloucester man I’m hoping it’ll be Vickery - we’ll see.

I spy for the FBI. No really, I do.

Posted at 1:35pm on Friday, January 16th, 2004

There’s a court case on the go at the moment where a car salesman allegedly pretended to be an MI5 agent and persuaded a group of students that the IRA were after them. In the 10 years (yup, you read that right, 10 years) that this went on apparently he conned a total of 650,000 out of them. Not only this, but it gets weirder… Today’s report details the fact that he even made one of them ‘act gay’. The student in question (now 34) admits that he ‘didn’t show the greatest intelligence’ during the affair. No shit Sherlock.

WorldCup 2006 to be chipped up

Posted at 9:56am on Friday, January 16th, 2004

FIFA has announced that they plan to place RFID chips in every ticket. Not that surprising - tickets are expensive and prone to forgery, chips are cheap - it’s something that a lot of RFID players have been thinking about. Still, good to see big events taking it on.

I hate shoes…

Posted at 9:18am on Friday, January 16th, 2004

…no, really, I do. It’s a long standing fact amongst people that know me that I think that shoes seriously suck (or blow, or whatever the yoof is for ‘are shit’ nowadays). These people however do not suffer the same affliction.

An even neater solution to the opt-in spam problem

Posted at 8:11am on Friday, January 16th, 2004

Last month I posted Spam Gourmet - a site that offers free, limited life email addresses to allow you to get round email sign ups on corporate sites. BugMeNot is an even neater solution - they have open logins to many sites, stopping you needing to sign up at all. How friendly!

This is so sad

Looks like Beagle is lost. Not only that, but it gives the Americans another reason to feel superior. Apparently good old British pluck just isn’t enough.

Truly mobile computing

Posted at 9:52am on Thursday, January 15th, 2004

Having banned the use of mobile phones while driving (but not text messaging, apparently - d’oh) maybe the UK should also ban the use of laptops at the wheel?
